? FAQ

What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is an event where students come together to build innovative projects over the course of a weekend. The purpose of a hackathon is for students to learn new skills and put them to use to create these projects. Students are provided resources such as workshops, hardware, and mentors to help put their projects together.

Who can participate?
ShellHacks is open to all university students and recent graduates (up to a year).

Do I need to have any experience?
Not at all! ShellHacks welcomes students of all academic backgrounds and skill levels. If you’re new to hackathons, we’ll have many introductory workshops for you to learn the skills you need. We’ll also have intermediate and advanced workshops for experienced students looking for a challenge. Whether you’re new to coding or a seasoned hacker, there’s something for you at ShellHacks!

Do I need to form a team before the event?
Nope! You can choose to form your team before or during the event. If you come without a team, we’ll have team building activities for you to meet other students and form your team. You can also choose to go at it solo if you like!

How many students are allowed per team?
A maximum of four students are allowed per team.

Does my project have to fit a theme?
It does not. You’re free to develop a project on any topic and using any technologies you like! However, you can also choose to tackle sponsor challenges and tailor your projects accordingly.

Do I have to stay the entire weekend?
You are not required to stay at FIU for the entire weekend. However, we strongly encourage you to spend as much time as possible learning at workshops and building your projects. Students are welcome to bring sleeping gear and stay on site, or go home to sleep and come back the following day.

Will food be provided?
Absolutely! Major meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), as well as snacks in between, will be provided for the entire duration of the event. There will also be lots of energy drinks and coffee to keep you going!

Is it really free of cost?
Yep! ShellHacks is totally free of cost to you thanks to our wonderful sponsors. Once you’re accepted, all you have to do is show up and enjoy the experience!

Who’s sponsoring ShellHacks?
Stay tuned! We’ll be announcing our sponsors in the coming months. Last year, ShellHacks counted with the support of over 50 amazing sponsors including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, and more!

Who organizes ShellHacks?
ShellHacks is organized by Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the largest student organization for technology at FIU.

How do I register?
ShellHacks registration will officially open up in the coming months. However, you can pre-register today to get notified when registration goes live and secure your spot right away!

I have more questions. Can I contact you guys?
