Center for Agile and Intelligent Power Systems (CAIPS) Research Awarded to FIU

Associate Professor Mohammed Ashiqur Rahman recently received a new award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) to establish the “Center for Agile and Intelligent Power Systems (CAIPS)”. Members of CAIPS’ team will research and develop various moving target defense (MTD) techniques to prevent cyber-attacks from hiding systems from adversaries. The approaches consider different cyber and physical moves and their controlled applications in the power systems to deceive adversaries, limiting the potential threat space. This research could be especially useful in systems with communications channels that can easily be rerouted or switched.

The award provides $2.5 million for the research team and their partners. FIU will partner with several universities including, North Carolina State University, the University of Alabama Birmingham, Tennessee Tech, and the University of West Florida, as well as industry partners Raytheon Technologies and Bedrock Systems, and the Idaho National Laboratory. Joining Prof. Ashiqur Rahman’s team from FIU will be Drs. Sumit Paudyal (ECE), Kemal Akkaya (KFSCIS) and Arif Sarwat (ECE).
