Dr. Wenqian Dong Wins IEEE Computer Society Early Career Research Award

The IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS) recently announced that Dr. Wenqian Dong had been selected as one of three winners of the 2023 IEEE–CS Technical Community on High-Performance Computing (TCHPC) Early Career Researchers Award for Excellence in High-Performance Computing. The award is sponsored by the IEEE–CS TCHPC to recognize up to three individuals each year, “…who have made outstanding, influential, and potentially long-lasting contributions in the field of high-performance computing within five years of receiving their Ph.D. degree.”

Dr. Dong’s research focuses on three areas where she has made significant contributions. In the area of scientific machine learning, she has developed new methods of machine learning to speed up high-performance computing (HPC) applications. Her work has been showcased at conferences such as the International Conference for High-Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis in both 2019 and 2020. She has also excelled in automatic machine learning, where she has concentrated on creating machine learning models for HPC applications. She received accolades for her work in conference papers submitted to the 47th International Conference on Very Large Databases (VLDB’21), the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) International Symposium on High-Performance Parallel and Distributed Computing (HPDC) which is the premier annual conference for presenting the latest research on the design, implementation, evaluation, and the use of parallel and distributed systems for high-end computing, and the 2022 ACM Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems (ASPLOS) Conference.

Another of her areas of expertise includes the optimization of system performance to enhance the quality and efficiency of HPC applications. Her work in this avenue of research has been presented at various conferences such as the ACM International Conference on Supercomputing (ICS’21) and the European Conference on Computer Systems (Eurosys’21) among many others.

Her work has generated real impacts within the HPC community. One such contribution has been her work on power grid simulation using machine learning which has led to more than threefold improvement in system performance. This significant contribution was highlighted in Newswise, a leading publication in research news within the scientific community. She has taken an active role within the HPC community, serving as an organizer for the MLBench’23 workshop and has served as a member of several Technical Program Committees in IEEE and AI4Science.

Dr. Wenqian Dong is an assistant professor in the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences (KFSCIS) within the College of Engineering and Computing at Florida International University (FIU). She earned her Ph.D. in EECS at the University of California, Merced, in Spring 2022.
