FIU Places in NBC Hackathon

The brand-new Telemundo Center has officially been inaugurated with its very first official hackathon! This past weekend of November 2nd, Comcast NBCUniversal held a hackathon to encourage students to develop their skills, network, and compete for a $10,000 grand prize!

NBCUniversal set a main challenge for students to create compelling solutions that focus on enhancing storytelling through mobile AR, AI, machine learning, IoT and other technologies. Teams were given 24 hours to develop their ideas and were granted access to platforms, SDKs, APIs, and other content from sponsors. Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) was also one of the event partners, alongside other well-known local organizations such as IronHack and Wyncode.

We are very proud to announce that the grand prize winner was UPE’s own Aldo Egas and his team! The Trinity team created a speech-to-text application that relives a personal experience at any event through videos recorded by the user, essentially creating a dynamic short film. FIU continues to be a major player in the biggest Florida hackathons, from ShellHacks earlier in the Fall to the NBC Hackathon this month. Stay tuned for upcoming hackathons and events for Florida hackers through UPE’s membership and mailing list!
