The Florida Board of Governors recently informed FIU Provost Elizabeth Bejar that, “the Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, CIP 30.7001, proposed by Florida International University, will be added to the State University System Academic Degree Program Inventory, effective fall 2024.” This signifies a major milestone in the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences’ efforts to meet South Florida’s and the nation’s needs for skilled data scientists .
The new program, which is set to launch in fall 2024, is a result of a two-year effort. The 120-credit hour program offers three specializations:
- Computational and Big Data Analytics,
- Artificial Intelligence and Robotics,
- and Statistical Modeling.
It combines computer science, statistics, and mathematics to equip students with advanced techniques and tools for data-driven decision-making across various sectors. Graduates can expect a wide range of career opportunities, including roles as Data Scientists, Data Analysts, Data Engineers, and specialized positions in fields such as biology and business.
The job market outlook for data scientists is rich. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment rate for data scientists will grow by 35% through 2032. Currently, only 33% of the job ads listed on LinkedIn in the IT and tech industry specifically require a data science degree. However, as the need for these specific skills increases, so will the demand for data scientists and engineers.
“Development and delivery of this new bachelor of science degree is the result of vision, determination, and commitment of the KFSCIS faculty to help position South Florida as the new U.S. leader in technology,” stated Dr. Jason Liu, Endowed Professor and Director of the School. “Our work with community leaders, as well as the community’s business and industry leaders has kept us very attuned to the demands of the marketplace.”
The program will also reap huge benefits for graduates with increasing job opportunities and an average starting data scientist’s salary in the U.S. offering more than $95,000 a year.
