The School of Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS) highlights some of the Ph.D. students in Computer Science who have received internship opportunities at important and renowned companies this Summer:
Deya Banisakher
Deya Banisakher is a Ph.D. candidate at SCIS working in the COGNAC Lab under the supervision of Dr. Mark Finlayson and Dr. Naphtali Rishe. His research in-large focuses on the intersection of machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) and their applications to the medical domain. He is an NSF CREST (Center for Research Excellence in Science and Technology) fellow, where he works in the CAChE (Center for Aquatic Chemistry and Environment) group as an NLP researcher under the direct supervision of Dr. Finlayson and Dr. Shu-Ching Chen. Deya has been selected to visit the renowned Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee as a summer research intern. He is working under the mentorship of Supriya Chinthavali in the Computational Data Analytics Research group which falls within the Computer Science and Mathematics Division. At ORNL, Deya is working on cutting-edge national-scale technologies and projects including the URBAN NET and Eagle-I projects which target the identification and detection of vulnerable nodes in the nation’s critical infrastructure networks. He will be applying his knowledge in NLP and ML towards his work at ORNL as well as learn and develop new technical skills including visualization and graph analytics.
Mireya Jurado
Mireya Jurado is pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science under Dr. Bogdan Carbunar in the Cyber Security and Privacy lab. This summer, she will be a Research Program Intern in the Secure Resilient Systems and Technology Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. In 2015, Ms. Jurado received her BA from the University of Miami in International Studies and Anthropology and in 2016, she became the first female to receive the SCIS Director Award Fellowship at Florida International University.
Stephanie Lunn
Stephanie Lunn is a graduate student at Florida International University working in the Affective Social Computing Laboratory with Dr. Christine Lisetti. She recently completed her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Florida International University in the Fall of 2016, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Stephanie also holds two degrees from the University of Miami in Neuroscience: a B.S. degree with Cum Laude and with General Honors distinctions, and an M.S. degree. Stephanie is interested in research on socially intelligent virtual agents. Currently, she is working on her Ph.D., with a focus on the application of health/medical avatars for the delivery of web-based interventions.
Victor H. Yarlott
Victor H. Yarlott, a 2nd Year Ph.D. student working on natural language processing (NLP) in Dr. Mark Finlayson’s Cognac Lab, is going to IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center for a summer internship. The T.J. Watson Research Center is the headquarters for IBM Research, the largest industrial research organization in the world. At IBM, he will work on a system to apply NLP techniques developed in the Cognac Lab in the domain of regulatory documents.
Qing Wang
Qing Wang is a third-year Ph.D. student in FIU, advised by Dr. Tao Li. Her research interests mainly focus on Large Scale Data Mining, Interactive Recommender System, and Knowledge Graph. During her master study, she had an internship in IBM of Xi’an site and mainly focus on designing and building the automotive testing frameworks both for Client System and Online System. During her Ph.D. study, she did one summer internship at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. They proposed an integrated framework for discovering the informative phrases from IT incident tickets and constructing the knowledge base. They make use of it to facilitate the system’s learning and to increase the automation of IT service management. In the current, she has started her second-time internship at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center within Cognitive Service Management Team since May 8th. Now they are working on interactively recommending automation tools using contextual multi-armed bandit algorithms.
